Well, isn't this just a week for breaking records?  Yes it is.

Yesterday, Apple announced that their iTunes music store has hit the 5-billion-songs-sold mark since the day they started five  years ago.  According to AppleInsider , "The digital download service is the number one music retailer in the US, according to the most recent data from NPD Group's MusicWatch survey, and features the largest music catalog with over eight million songs."

iTunes has indeed changed the way people purchase music (when they purchase them at all).  The iTunes+iPod/iPhone infrastructure makes it undeniably easy to consume media hence the popularity of the gadgets and the sto...more

  • I'm no Mac user but I know many and more people are loving the PC alternative. Apple has been keen on making flashy new innovations and they have definitely proved their capability to do just that with the iPod and iPhone. The iMac and MacBook have had their fair share of success and currently enjoy a safe and snugh 2nd place slot below the PC.

Today, quietly, Apple revamped their line of iMacs. The new iMacs which are available from Apple stores are now sporting new, faster processors but the don't cost a penny more than the old ones last week.

Acually I've no idea what the old iMacs were sporting in them but they sure do look great. Which by the way is another plus when getting an iMac, it makes a great centerpiece for your desk.

So here are the new specs simply fyi.

    The new 20-inch 2.4 GHz iMac, for a suggested...more

  • Steve Jobs emailed his employees last week expressing his sadness regarding the slumping US economy and the the effects on Apple's stocks. After falling from a $220 high to a $130 low, Jobs was the hardest hit having 5.5 million shares in Apple effectively losing about $380 million on paper. "Our stock is being buffeted around by factors a lot larger than ourselves," he said in the email.

Jobs acknowledged the slumping stocks yet remained optimistic that those shares will rebound. He based his optimism on a 24 month performance chart which clearly showed that Apple was doing better than other blue-chip tech companies like Google, Microsoft, HP, and Dell.

It was obvious that Jobs was also worried about the current situation but...more

  • Last year I was easily better informed, it was as if everywhere I looked on the web Steve Jobs' speech was anticipated, publicized and hyped.   Last year, Steve Jobs released the iPhone and the world waited and gasped.

Macworld 2008. Oh?  That was today?  Sure, there were announcements and some articles in the news about Jobs' keynote or the Stevenote.  But it was not as loud as the hype the iPhone brought last year.  Anyway, Steve Jobs' delivered his keynote speech this morning and here's what he had to say, in a nutshell.

    1.  iTunes movie rentals go live today.  we previously reported that Apple signed a deal with Fox for movie rentals on iTunes.  Today, that has become reality.  Here's what ReadWriteWeb had to say: "The iTunes Movie Rental store launc...more

  • think secret

Apple has finally won the court battle it started with the blog site ThinkSecret after 2 years of squabbling.

ThinkSecret was a blog dedicated to leaking out information from Apple regarding software and hardwware technologies. Aside from that, they have also been the loudest blog to speak against the Apple brand. In 2005, Apple sued ThinkSecret for leaking apple products that were yet to be showcased in MacWorld Expo 2005. Since then ThinkSecret was able to continue doing what it did until today.

ThinkSecret may have been the most hated blog of Apple but it was probably the most loved technical review and update source of Mac users everywhere. ThinkSecret tried to have the suit dismissed under the First Ammendment but to no avail.

Anyway, Apple and ThinkSecret have come to a settlement and the blog has been taken down. N...more

  • The Wall Street Journal Asia reports that Apple head honchos are in Japan discussing the release of the iPhone in the country.

Apple is eyeing NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest mobile telecommunications provide, to distribute the iPhone.  According to NTT DoCoMo's president Masao Nakamura, they are still in the early stages of discussion.

Japan is the world's second largest economy and has a 100 million mobile users who change phones every 2 years on the average. The Journal says, "Japanese consumers are also already used to shelling out hundreds of dollars for expensive phones with advanced capabilities such as digital television, camera and music."

It's not unlikely that the iPhone will be a big hit in Japan especially with the existing iPod customer base Apple already has in that country.

  • AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson confirmed at a meeting in Santa Clara, CA that Apple and AT&T will be releasing the iPhone on a 3G network next year.  AS to when exactly there was no word.

The current Apple iPhone in the US runs on the AT&T network and is not capable of 3G connectivity yet.  The iPhone, whose most outstanding featureis its internet connectivity, relies on EDGE technology.  However, EDGE is not the latest nor the fastest of mobile data technologies which renders the iPhone underpowered for its features.

Apple did not release 3G iPhones initially due to problems theey had with battery life.  Apparently, the iPhone itself already consumes too much power that if a 3G iPhone were to run on the current batteries, it would only last a few hours.   Though many conspiracy theorists suggest that Apple did not release...more
