    CBS announced earlier today their plans regarding a partnership with Yahoo.  The Eye Network (CBS) and Yahoo were actually finalizing a deal that would make Yahoo part of CBS's Audience Network which includes of 300 partners including Youtube, AOL, MSN, Joost, Veoh, Fancast, Bebo, and TVGuide, etc .

    The Audience Network offers short-form clips from CBS, CSTV and Showtime, and before the inclusion of Yahoo reached nearly 90 percent of the Web. The clips are advertising-supported and free to consumers. [Reuters ]

    CNET Networks, the company behind CNET, ZDNet, GameSpot.com, TV.com, CNET News, UrbanBaby, BNET, CHOW and Search.com, have been acquired by media giant and oldie, CBS fir $1.8 billion.

    At first this would have sounded like a great big buy out that would rival Time Warner's acquisition of AOL or the possible merger of Yahoo and  Microsoft, or the Google acquisition of YouTube.  However, this comes as a diappointment to many people keeping tabs on the business side of CNET.

    Leslie Moonves, President and Chief Executive Officer at CBS Corporation, said this about the acquisition:

  • CBS opened an experimental video site to test HD streaming.

    The site is clearly meant for testing and is located in their labs.  HD videos are streamed from the site in H.264/AVC format at 480p, with 720p and 1080p (coming soon).   The 480p and 780p formats are already considerd high definition which is where online video services are leaning towards including Youtube and Hulu.

    Hulu, unlike Youtube only streams high quality HD videos under copyright from NBC Universal.  CBS might also be planning for a Hulu-like service which would explain these tests. 

    Given that Hulu is already streaming HD, the CBS project is nothing new except for the planned 1080p streaming capability.  Hulu currently ony streams 480p and 720p and the 1080[ videos are progressively downloaded instead of being streamed.
