Facebook has announced that they are building a Jabber/XMPP interface for their Facebook IM service.

The Facebook IM service allows users to instant message their friend who are currently online browsing through Facebook.  The great thing is, everybody in  your friends list is already your contact on Facebook IM which takes out the hassle of adding friends into an IM client.

There were some rumors about Facebook taking the  chat service out of the browser sometime but now they announced that they definitely will.  Users will be able to chat with their contacts on Facebook with a IM client on the desktop without the need to log into the social network in the browser.  Think Google Talk IM client and the integrated Google Talk in Gmail.

  • Facebook has announced their upcoming IM service last month with no definite release date. Today however, the Facebook chat service has finally landed on user profiles and it's great.

The news comes not from any official press release or blog entry but from actual use. It wouldn't come as a surprise that users will start tinkering with the new service as soon as it went live and true enough, after leaving my PC on while out for dinner, I come back to a mess on the browser page where Facebook used to be.

Facebook chat it great! Interface is clean, response time is fast and it cuts the time down to check out the IM details of the friends you want to chat with. Moreover there is no need to launch the IM service because it actively resides at the bottom of the Faceboo...more

  • Today I noticied an ad on my Gmail. it basically said that I can now chat with my AIM buddies on Gmail.

Integrated Gtalk on Gmail is one of the things that made me shift to Gmail.Let's face it, it's just too convenient to have IM capabilities along with your mail. Google of course used their own IM first but now with AIM already in, let's hope that ICQ and Jabber follow. And since we're being really hopeful, Y!M in Gmail would be great too.

  • Yesterday, AOL purchased the social network Bebo with plans to marry it with AIM.  Today, it seems that social nwtork + IM is becoming the trend.  Facebook is working on an instant messaging service that they will be integrating on their site (of course).

Basically, the IM service built into Facebook will allow users to chat with their friends without leaving Facebook or opening another application.  This is not entirely new, Social IM already tried this as a cross platform service but has failed to penetrate the market probably because you still had to go to the Social IM website and configure your social network to work with it (not too hard to do but still an extra step).  MySpace also has a similar service MySpaceIM.

The Facebook IM offers quite the same service as MySpace but...more

  • I have always considered the instant messenger the ultimate "the world at your fingertips" communication device.  One good reason, it's free.  Another great thing about IM is that it's a written document of conversations which you can review anytime.

Anyways, most instant messenger clients have the option to save conversations but it's limited to the machine where it is installed.  In comes IM-History , this multiprotocol IM client stores your conversation archives online using secure facilities of course.

I never noticed the need for this feature before but now that there's an solution, I keep on remembering the times when I needed it.  For example, if  you're a telecommuter and you usually tal...more

  • Wouldn't it be great if you could simply ask somebody and get a straight answer anytime, instantly? Though search engines and answers communities by Google and Yahoo are trying to do this but more often that not, users have to wait a while for their answer to come. Sometimes too, communities like Yahoo Answers answers are way out of line with regards to the asked question since answers are crawled with a search engine or AI.

Jyve is another answers community that is not powered by AI but instead by real human intelligence. Jyve is a portal where you can ask any question and somebody online would answer. Of course it doesn't work 100% of the time but at least it has a bit of ma more tangible human contact, instant messaging.

Once the question is asked, users will wait for ...more

  • Two web services doing exactly the same thing. Why not? Google and Yahoo do it.

I've been hearing about Twitter a lot lately so I decided to give it a shot but after seeing two screencasts I tried out Jaiku at the same time.

The idea of RSSing your own activities for all the world to see is not entirely new especially with chat boxes in forums that update in real time. But sites like Twitter and Jaiku are really new focusing on the concept of the chatbox and transforming it into a sort of social network or community.more

  • It was always a frustration of mine that I did not have a twin brother that would cover for me when I'm gone.  It's always been a fantasy for me that if I had a twin, he's be going to school for me and we'll take turns at work and with our girlfriends.  Well, like I said, it's just a fantasy.

MyCyberTwin creates a virtual you on the internet to engage in IM's when you have to be offline.  How this is possible is not entirely new.  By using a little AI, and a 79 item questionairre, MyCybeTwin tries to mimic your behaivior and speaking pattern on MSN Messenger.

The point here is not to deceive but if the need be, why not?  The amazing part here is the ability to program your twin to talk like you.  I have no idea how the software works but it's something from the movies (Mission: Impossible 3....more

  • If you can't think of a new service, mix them up. This is probably exactly what Jubii was thinking when they started doing this site. Most people have many channels of communication on the web. There's email, instant messaging (IM), voice-over internet protocol (Voip), short message service (SMS), file sharing, and contact list. Many companies specialize in at least one of these specific channels like Skype for VOIP, Yahoo for Email, and Google for email and IM. Jubii on the other hand tries to specialize in all those by seamlessly integrating all channels of web communication into one web-based, browser-based platform.

There are of course many advantages of this unified web communication platform but it wouldn't be any good if all wasn't working. Jubii's beta release is actually disappointing. To start with the access is ...more

  • Instant messaging has always been the epitome of communication at our fingertips. Since the first network chats in command lines, like Net Send, instant messaging has come a long way refining its features starting with mIRC, ICQ and then the revolutionary AIM and YahooMessenger which are now the leaders and standards of what an Instant Messenger (IM) should be.

A lot of smaller start-ups have been inspired to walk in the shadow of IM giants. All have their gimmicks to sway people to use their service and for this review, checking out a very interesting and amazing IM with uber cool avatars!
